At the 1991 Winkie and Munchkin Conventions, part of the programs was the 1948 Capitol Records audio-only adaptation of “Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz”. Rather than just have people listen to it, Oz artist and animator Robert Roy MacVeigh provided a large number of watercolor paintings. To preserve MacVeigh’s wonderful slideshow, the presentation was put on videotape posthumously in 1993. In this adaptation Dorothy, the Wizard, cousin Zeb, Jim the Horse, and Dorothy’s cat, Eureka, have an adventure throughout some of the surrounding countries of Oz.

Orphaned from an early age and taken in by her aunt Em, Dorothy suffers from the absence of her parents. One morning, a cyclone hits his village and Dorothy has no time to take refuge in the family shelter. Dorothy and the Scarecrow are now in the Emerald City. They have become friendly with the Wizard, and together with the woodman, the cowardly lion, and several new creations equally delightful, they journey through Oz -- the earthquake -- and into the glass city. The Scarecrow is elated to think he is going to get his brains at last and be like other men are; the Tin-Woodman is bent upon getting a heart, and the cowardly lion pleads with the great Oz for courage. All these are granted by his Highness. Dorothy picks the princess. -- The Dangerous Mangaboos. -- Into the black pit, and out again. We then see Jim, the cab horse, and myriads of pleasant surprises that hold and fascinate.

Later, it was released on VHS a few times by Toei Video. In the United States, it was dubbed in English and released as part of Volume 4 in the My Favorite Fairy Tales video series, produced in 1986 by Saban Productions and released in 1987 by Hi-Tops Video. It was re-released twice: 1990 by Video Treasures, and 1995 by Anchor Bay Entertainment.
